Maureen O’Hara launches Golf Classic to packed audience at Glengarriff Golf Club (June 8th)

Over 700 golfers expected to play in the various events.

On Friday June 8th, the Maureen O’Hara/C. Blair Golf Classic was launched by Maureen to a large attendance of club members, visitors and the sponsors of the varied events. This marks the 29th year of the competition, making it the longest running Golf Classic in Ireland.

Paddy Mulcahy, Club President, welcomed all and introduced the evening’s proceedings and announced that local talent would be keeping the crowd entertained for the night under the watchful eye of Brendan O’Sullivan.

Anne Cronin, Lady Captain, and daughter of one of the classic founders, Luke Flanagan, summarised the rich history of the competition and thanked the sponsors and all who helped with the variety of events.

Barry McSweeney, Captain, outlined the programme of events which include the ladies and gents team classics, mixed foursomes, a senior’s day, a men’s singles, an adult scramble, the fashion show and for the first year ever, a juvenile tournament. [See attached link for programme]I am very pleased to announce that upwards of 700 golfers will compete in the forthcoming events from over 30 golf clubs all over the country, this is a great reward for the hard work that has been put in to establish, sustain and develop this tournament. It is pleasantly surprising that in such an economic climate that this small club has managed to be so successful with this Classic.” He stressed the importance of the event for the club, the members and Glengarriff and looked forward to it being one of the most successful years to date. He then welcomed the Lady President, Maureen O’Hara who spoke passionately.

“I have strongly supported the golf club and this classic since I first came up with it with Johnny Barry, Patrick Carey and Luke Flanagan way back in 1983. We wanted to help bring tourists to Glengarriff and helping the local economy, and we did it! We helped attract more people to the area then and we’re still doing it now… It gladdens my heart to see that it’s still growing and this year, for the first time, juveniles are playing too. I’m delighted to hear Barry say that we’re longest established classic in the country and long may that continue.”

After she spoke, Maureen was presented with the first bottles of a specially designated ‘Maureen O’Hara Wine’ which she was then toasted with, by all, to huge applause.
